Which Voice Do You Hear?

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

Which Voice Do You Hear?

“But now you must be holy in everything you do,

just as God who chose you is holy.”

1 Peter 1:15

I have previously noted the affirmation from Bishop N.T. Wright that the world’s culture is telling us a pack of lies about who God is, who we are, and who our neighbors are. But God in Christ Jesus is telling us the truth.

The world entices us with the claim we are entitled. The world tends to be loud and screams for our allegiance. This is one voice.

The Prophet Elijah had a different experience. There was a mighty windstorm, but the Lord was not in the wind. There was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. There was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. (1Kings 19) The gentle whisper got Elijah’s attention.

My Takeaway: When I am entrusting my future confidently to God, I hear His gentle whisper. When I hear His whisper, I stay in His grace for today and seek to be holy in everything I do.

Face to Face

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

June 27, 2025

Face to Face

Since this new way gives us such confidence, we can be very bold.

2 Corinthians 3:12

The only model for leadership the people in Corinth knew was that of the pomp and circumstance of the Romans. Think about our President. The President never travels alone; he is surrounded by helpers, and everything around him is first class quality, the best. Consider Paul. He often traveled alone. He bought his clothes at Goodwill, did not stay in the best hotels, and worked in manual labor to provide for his needs. The people of the Corinthian church wanted their leaders to be more like the leaders in their cultural world.

Paul points out to the church that if they want to see glory, they are looking in the wrong place. He uses the example of Moses, and the people of Israel from Exodus 34 to make his point. While Moses was on the mountain receiving the Ten Commandments, the people turned from God to idolatry and made for themselves a golden calf to worship.

When Moses came down from the mountain, he was outraged, but not nearly as much as God. God insisted that there must be accountability for their sin against Him. Moses returned up the mountain, and, in prayer, interceded for the people. God revealed His mercy to Moses and sent Moses back to the people. After being in the very presence of the glory of God, Moses’ face shone like the sun. When the people saw Moses, they were afraid. Just as when you turn on a light and the roaches run for cover, so the sinfulness of the people was revealed by the glory of God in Moses’ face. Moses put a veil over his face so the people would not turn away from him.

Paul shows the church that if we try to earn our salvation, if we operate by performance-based acceptance, it is as though we are putting on a veil that prevents us from seeing the glory of God. The glory of God is Christ in us. Paul wants the church to know that living in the new way of the Holy Spirit, we have God’s glory within us, and God’s glory outshines anything the world has ever known. Why would we want the pomp and circumstance of the world when the truth of God in Christ is so much more?

My Takeaway: “Whenever, though, they turn to face God as Moses did, God removes the veil and there they are—face-to-face! They suddenly recognize that God is a living, personal presence, not a piece of chiseled stone. And when God is personally present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. We're free of it! All of us! Nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face. And so we are transfigured much like the Messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him.”

(2 Corinthians 3:16-18 The Message)

Now All Glory to God

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

June 26, 2025

Now All Glory to God

All glory, majesty, power, and authority are his before all time,

and in the present, and beyond all time! Amen.

Jude 1:25b

Jude’s given name was Judah, and it is believed he was Jesus’ brother. His name was shortened to Jude by the Bible translators to help distinguish him from the other Judah’s in the Bible.

Jude’s little letter is quite transparent on the condition of some first century churches. In her first generation, there were church splits and disputes. Some of the disputes were quite simple; it was then, and is now, always about control. The nature of our fallen flesh makes it inevitable that there will be disputes. Jude cautioned us to not accept that this is the norm for the church. Christ calls us to rise above the norm of our humanity and to accept God’s call for the church to strive for holiness.

Jude stressed how important it is for every Christian to have a solid foundation for their faith. This foundation is built upon an understanding of the nature of Jesus, His mission, His resurrection, and His ascension. Simply put, a Christian has been born into the family of God, and this is made possible by the forgiveness of our sins and the infilling of God’s Holy Spirit. It is Jesus who came in the flesh, who was crucified and raised to life again, who makes it possible for us to call upon the name of God and be saved.

Even with the church disputes, Jude is overwhelmed by the grace of God who has called us into a loving intimate relationship through our faith in Christ Jesus. Jude crowns his little letter with one of the most magnificent benedictions in the entire Bible:

Now all glory to God,

who is able to keep you from falling away

and will bring you with great joy

into his glorious presence

without a single fault.

All glory to him who alone is God,

our Savior

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All glory, majesty, power, and authority

are his before all time, and in the present,

and beyond all time!

Amen.

Jude 1:24-25

My Takeaway: I see Jude’s benediction as a glorious affirmation of these two affirmations of Saint Paul:

For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

Philippians 2:13

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Philippians 1:6

Beware of Greed

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

June 25, 2025

Beware of Greed

Then (Jesus) said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”

Luke 12:15

Jesus taught that our value is not measured by what we own. Jesus taught our value is measured by who we are. Are we a child of God. Or are we a child of the world’s culture?

In the ways of the world, if you have a lot of stuff, you are the big man, or woman, on campus. In the ways of the world, if you have little, you are thought of as little. The consequences of the ways of the world are easily predictable. If your value is determined by the sum of your possessions, then it is logical to acquire as much as you can. No price is too high when it comes to feathering your bed.

Jesus taught that greed is not measured by how much something costs; greed is measured by how much it cost you. If your quest for more possessions costs you your faith, or your family, the price was far too high.

My Takeaway: From God’s perspective, your value is measured by what he paid for you: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NRSV)

The Hope of the Resurrection

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

June 24, 2025

The Hope of the Resurrection

And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope.

1 Thessalonians 4:13

Imagine you are having coffee with friends after church. A visitor, who has been blind since birth, is brought by a friend to your table just as you are describing the magnificent sunset you saw last evening? In your mind’s eye you still vividly see the awesome display of color that was painted across the sky. How do you describe that scene to the visitor? Of the five senses, sight is the only one the visitor is missing. How do you describe color using only sound, smell, touch or taste? Now you have a measure of the difficulty Paul faced when he needed to explain the second coming of Christ to the Thessalonians (and us.)

Paul relied on metaphors that were inspired by Old Testament events such as Moses descending from the mountain. It is so very important that we do not get lost in the details of the metaphors and try to translate Paul’s imagery into a literal expectation of what it will be like when Jesus comes again. Let’s step back a bit and try to see the big picture. When I do, here is what I see in Paul’s description.

Paul’s metaphors are not about where the dead go when they die or what state the dead are in. They are an affirmation that the dead in Christ are in God’s care and when Jesus appears again, they will too.

All God’s children are equal in His sight. When Jesus comes again, we are still equal. Those who have died in Christ do not have an advantage over those who are still alive, or vice versa.

Our future resurrection does not mean 'spiritual' life in some faraway place called heaven. It means God’s people will have new and glorified bodies to live with and for God in the new redeemed world God will create.

There is grief when those we love die. But as Paul noted in the verse quoted above, we do not grieve like people who have no hope.

My Takeaway:  Christian hope remembers Psalm 30:11,

You have turned my mourning

into joyful dancing.

You have taken away my clothes of mourning

and clothed me with joy

Take Courage. I Am Here!

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

June 23, 2025

Take Courage. I Am Here!

About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water.  When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”

Matthew 14:25-26

Jesus had been speaking to a crown of 5,000 men, plus women and children. When it was time to take a break for a meal, all the disciples could gather was five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus said that was enough and all the people ate all they wanted, and there were twelve baskets full of leftovers. Jesus took a break to go and pray and sent the disciples across the lake in their boat. Then a storm broke, and at 3AM, as they were in danger of being swamped, the disciples saw something on the water, and they were terrified.

Then Jesus said, “Don’t be afraid. Take courage. I am here!” (Matthew 14:27)

It would be easy to criticize the disciple’s lack of faith as they had just witnessed Jesus feeding seven to ten thousand people with five small loaves of bread and two small fish. Easy that is, until I stop and think of all the times I have either failed, or have been very slow to discern the presence of God working in my life.

Six weeks ago, on May 12, I shared a line in my Daily Office bedtime prayer that has become very important to both Cheryl and me.

“Guide us waking, O Lord,

and guard us sleeping;

that awake we may watch with Christ,

and asleep we may rest in peace.”

My Takeaway: That awake we may watch with Christ. I am finding this simple prayer to be very helpful in keeping me focused on God’s grace for today.

How Much More

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

June 20, 2025

How Much More

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.”

Matthew 7:7

Jesus teaches us here that God wants our prayers to be bold, adventuresome, and flowing from our heart. Our prayers are not judged on whether we get the words, doctrine, or theology right. Our prayers are not judged good because we rightly understand our own needs, or what is best for us. We don’t need to understand our own needs because “(our) Father knows exactly what (we) need even before (we) ask him!” (Matthew 6:8).

Jesus is telling us to just ‘ask’ God! With childlike trust in God, just ask your Abba; tell Him what is in your heart and trust Him to sort out your prayers. There will be times when you are not able to articulate what you are feeling. In those times, Jesus says we are to seek God. That doesn’t mean God is hiding; rather, this is an invitation to explore different types of prayer such as centering prayer, contemplative prayer, or fasting prayer. With persistence we keep at it until God’s peace gives us the assurance we are in His grasp. Then there are other times when we are desperate. Articulating our prayers is not an issue. Neither do we need to seek to find God; we know where He is. What we need is help, and we need it now! In those times, Jesus says Heaven awaits our holy boldness. Jesus assures us that when we bang on the doors of heaven, the Heavenly doors will be opened for us.

Jesus is teaching us about “the new way of living in the Spirit” (Romans 7:6). To emphasize the wonder of our right-standing relationship with God, Jesus introduces a wonderful phrase at the end of this passage: how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him” (Matthew 7:11b Emphasis mine). Here, near the end of the first half of this year, it is a good time to pause and ask ourselves, “How is it going with my life?” Where are the places in my life where I can heed Jesus’ invitation to keep on asking, keep on seeking, and keep on knocking?

My Takeaway: And, as I keep on asking, seeking, and knocking, I do so with an expectant heart, believing how much more God wants to bless me.

Pray in the Spirit

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

June 19, 2025

Pray in the Spirit

I am in chains now, still preaching this message as God’s ambassador. So pray that I will keep on speaking boldly for him, as I should.

Ephesians 6:20

“Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere” (Ephesians 6:18). Paul closes his letter to the Ephesians with a call to prayer.  Prayer may be the most difficult and the most misunderstood aspect of the Christian life.

Praying is hard work. What Paul has in mind cannot be accomplished by a few minutes early in the morning as you try to pray with sleep still in your eyes, or a few minutes late in the evening when your body is longing for sleep. While that may be better than no prayer at all, it is like giving a hungry person a piece of stale bread. That may be better than no food at all, but it’s certainly not a substitute for a good meal.

Take time to reflect on whether your prayer life is consistent with the call to prayer Paul is making, and if not, why not? A good barometer of our prayer life is to measure our prayer requests over and against the prayers of Paul. Ephesians 6:19-20 is a good place to start looking:

“And pray for me, too. Ask God to give me the right words so I can boldly explain God’s mysterious plan that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles alike. I am in chains now, still preaching this message as God’s ambassador. So pray that I will keep on speaking boldly for him, as I should.”

My Takeaway: The number one prayer request in many prayer chains are requests to change our circumstances. If Paul followed that model, his request quoted above would have been to be released from jail. Yet he prayed for boldness to keep proclaiming the Good News of Jesus. Jesus modeled this prayer when he was in the Garden of Gethsemane: “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” (Matthew 26:39b, Emphasis mine) Seeking God’s will in our life anchors us in His grace for each day.

Wondrous, Overwhelming, Amazing, Incredible, Extraordinary, Grace

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

June 18, 2025

Wondrous, Overwhelming, Amazing, Incredible, Extraordinary, Grace

“If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them wanders away, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost?”

Matthew 18:12

In Matthew 18, Jesus taught about our life together as the church. Jesus sees each church, each congregation as a microcosm of the Kingdom of God. Jesus is leading us to that place where our congregations reflect to the world what it is like to live under the reign of God. Like any good builder, Jesus knows that His church must be built upon a solid foundation. In Matthew 16, Jesus laid the first foundation stone for His church. He said he would build His church upon the Confession of Faith that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. If the first foundation stone is about Jesus, the second foundation stone is about us. The strength of this foundation stone is not so much that we are the children of God, as it is in how we became the children of God.

Jesus is not the Messiah because he did all the things the Messiah was supposed to do. Jesus is the Messiah because of the incarnation. He is God’s only begotten Son.

In a similar way, we are not the children of God because we behave the way the children of God should behave. We are the children of God because we have been forgiven of our sin by the wondrous, overwhelming, amazing, incredible, extraordinary, awesome, marvelous grace of God.

The children of God aren’t meant to shuffle around muttering “I’m just a sinner saved by grace.” Our destiny is to forevermore sing, and dance and shout, and rejoice and celebrate and delight in the truth that we are the beloved of God, through and through, first, last and always, by the wondrous, overwhelming, amazing, incredible, extraordinary, awesome, marvelous grace of God.

My Takeaway: When we remember who we are, and how we got here, living together in the way Jesus described is as natural as breathing. So also is staying in the grace for today.

Your Innocence Radiates Like the Dawn

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

June 17, 2025

Your Innocence Radiates Like the Dawn

Commit everything you do to the Lord.

Trust him, and he will help you.

He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn,

and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun.

Psalm 37:5-6

The psalmist, an old and very wise teacher, crafted this psalm as an acrostic poem, the stanzas of which begin with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Basically, the psalm is a collection of wise sayings that contrast the lives of the wicked with the lives of those who are faithful to God. The psalmist’s wisdom and experience have taught him that the spoils of the wicked are “like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither” (Psalm 37:2), but the blessings of God are eternal.

The essential message of the psalm is in verses 5-6:

“Commit everything you do to the Lord.

Trust him, and he will help you.

He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn,

and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun.”

This is a very profound, yet simple, way to pattern your life. First, you commit your life to God. Second, you exercise faith in God by trusting Him with your life. Third, God will act. The psalmist is not very specific about how God will act, but the description is rather breathtaking. The psalmist is trying to describe the wonder, beauty and awe associated with being in the presence of God. The reward for faithfulness to God is being in perfect peace as you rest in the presence of your Heavenly Father. The psalmist refers to the blessing of God as, “The godly will possess the land and will live there forever” (Psalm 37:29). This means the reward is eternal.

Our culture bombards us with messages that rewards and blessings must be tangible and received here and now. But God’s blessings are His presence with us, now and forever.

My Takeaway: Because of God’s faithfulness we can sing, “The godly will possess the land and will live there forever” (Psalm 37:29), and our singing will help us stay in God’s grace for today.

So Christ Has Truly Set Us Free

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

June 16, 2025

So Christ Has Truly Set Us Free

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.

Romans 3:23-24

In today’s passage, Paul presented two foundational principles for our quest to make the life in Christ our way of life. First, we agree with Paul; we have sinned and fallen short of God’s purpose in our life. Secondly, God so loves us, He provided His solution for our predicament. These two principles lead us into the ultimate truth of the Gospel: what is true for Jesus is true for the people of Jesus. Through my faith in the faithfulness of Jesus fulfilling his mission as God's Messiah, I become one of Jesus' people. Because Jesus is in a right relationship with God, I too am in a right relationship with God, because what is true for Jesus is true for me.

All of this is made possible through the marvelous grace of God which I receive through my faith in the faithfulness of Jesus. Christ Jesus freed us from the penalty for our sins (verse 24). Too often, Christians misinterpret ‘bad things’ coming into their lives as God punishing them for their sins. Banish the thought! Jesus has already paid the penalty for our sins!

My Takeaway: Christ has truly set us free to live in his grace for today. “So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.” (Galatians 5:1).

The Choice

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

The Choice

. . . choose today whom you will serve.

Joshua 24:15

A week ago, our church concluded a several month study of the book of Joshua. Joshua’s closing challenge to Israel came at the conclusion of Israel’s conquest of the Promised Land and the division of the land for the twelve tribes. A simple way to understand the book of Joshua is that it is one miracle after another. God continually shows himself strong and faithful to his covenant with Israel.

Even so, Joshua challenged the people, “But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live?” (24:15) I think his challenge is insightful to the human condition. How easy it is for us to slip away from God and form our own golden calf, something visible or tangible or more palpable to our sensibilities. There is so much we can see and touch that tempts us. The hymn, Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, puts it bluntly:

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,

prone to leave the God I love.

My Takeaway: Joshua answered his own challenge: “But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord” (24:15). The hymn, Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, echoes Joshua’s words,

here’s my heart; O take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above.”

Yes Lord, here is my heart seeking to stay in your grace for today.

Created To Be Like God

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

Created To Be Like God

. . . let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.

Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Ephesians 4:23-24

Earlier this year, during Lent, Cheryl and I began to use the Daily Office in our morning prayers together. This routine includes several passages of scripture, confessions, intercessions, Collects and Canticles. All these forms of prayers extoll the virtues, the grace and the mercy that is our God. All of these are being used by God to help us put on our new nature. We were created to be like God and this discipline is moving us along to become truly righteous and holy. As I have noted before, sometimes it seems I am moving along toward God’s purpose for me at a snail’s pace, but nevertheless,

we are transfigured much like the Messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him.

2 Corinthians 3:18 (The Message)

My Takeaway: I have found one of the mostly difficult truths to grasp, to own, is that God cares for me. And, that I was created to be like God. It is much easier to own that I am a sinner who falls short of the glory of God. Even so, God said I was created to be like him. I choose to, by God’s grace, accept this as reality in my life. How about you?
