Mark 7:31-37

Jesus’ ministry had reached the tipping point. Jesus wanted to spend more time teaching the people how to live in harmony with God (John Wesley called this scriptural holiness). However, the news of Jesus’ miraculous healings spread throughout the land and the excitement surrounding his ministry made it impossible to maintain a low profile.

Jesus, the Messiah came as the true King. This was a subversive message to the reigning Jewish king, as well as the Roman Emperor. Jesus was so much more than a preacher, healer and do-gooder; he was the Messiah. The healings and miracles were signs of his messianic authority. The way Jesus healed the deaf and mute man caused the Jews to immediately recall the words of Isaiah 35: 5-6a,

“And when he comes, he will open the eyes of the blind
and unplug the ears of the deaf.
The lame will leap like a deer,
and those who cannot speak will sing for joy!”

To seek the life in Christ as our way of life is to become a fully-devoted follower of Jesus. As Jesus is fully formed within us, our lives are transformed as God works within us, giving us the desire and the power to do what pleases him. (Philippians 2:13) To this end, whenever the church gathers for worship, our goal is to see our lives transformed by changing the way we think (Romans 12:2).

My Takeaway: Our goal is also to expect something astonishing because life can never be predictable or routine when the Messiah is present!

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
