A Place of Permanence

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

A Place of Permanence

The Lord will guide you continually,

giving you water when you are dry

    and restoring your strength.

You will be like a well-watered garden,

like an ever-flowing spring.

Isaiah 58:11

As Cheryl and I walked across the street to visit a neighbor, I observed our flowering plants by the mailbox were seriously drooping. “I’ll water them when we come home” she said. She didn’t have to; a nice summer shower provided for them within an hour. The next morning as I backed out of our driveway, I saw “a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.”

To me, the verse quoted above, speaks of the permanence of God. Two places help me lay hold of this truth of God. The first is the stunning eloquence of the Supremacy of Christ in Colossians 1:15-20, affirming Christ existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation. Christ Jesus is immoveable, never changing in his sacrificial love for all humankind. The second place is when I am kneeling at the altar and receiving Holy Communion. Presently, it is my custom to receive this sacrament approximately one hundred times each year. Whether I taste the sacrament once, or one hundred times, or ten thousand times, Christ is the same in the elements of Holy Communion. When I receive the bread and cup, I experience anew the presence of Jesus in my life as I look forward to his coming again in final victory.

My Takeaway: My places of permanence are Holy Scripture and Holy Communion. Together they keep me grounded in God’s grace for today. Where are your places of permanence?

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
