I believe Paul’s prayer here is
rivaled only by the Lord’s Prayer as perhaps the greatest prayer in the Bible.
Before you read the prayer again, take a moment to imagine the Apostle Paul in
a small, cramped, dimly-lit jail cell. All of his personal concerns that could
have been at the top of his prayer list are cast aside so that he can pray for
his friends in Ephesus. And how he prayed!
“(God) will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit; Christ
will make his home in your hearts; Your roots will grow down into God’s love
and keep you strong; And may you have the power to understand how wide, how
long, how high, and how deep his love is; May you experience the love of
Christ; you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that
comes from God” (Ephesians 3:16-19).
Which one of these six petitions
appeals the most to your soul? Write that petition on a slip of paper and keep
it with you for the next week. Pray the petition often and allow God to do a
work in your life by bringing you into a full and complete understanding of the
truth of that petition in your life. I believe at the end of the week you will
join your voice with Paul in his beautiful doxology: “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work
within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to
him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever!
Amen” (Ephesians 3:20-21).

(Selah is a word that appears in the
Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my
correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about
these things.)
