Ephesians 3:1-7
NOTE: During the week of October
6-10 I am taking a little vacation to tour Civil War battlefields, from
Gettysburg to Harpers Ferry to Antietam to Charlottesville. During this week I am republishing
my meditations from the first week in October last year.
The Gentiles often referred to
the Jews as atheists because the Jews did not worship idols, and they had no
statues of their God. When Paul proclaimed the Good News to the Gentiles, he
first had to convince his listeners that the Jews in fact worshipped the only
true and living God. Then Paul explained that the God of Abraham loved all the people
of the “world so much that he gave his
one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have
eternal life” (John 3:16). In our culture, most preachers simply proclaim
Jesus without making a case for the Christian’s connection to Israel. That is a
shame. Paul was so passionate about the Christian’s connection to God’s
heritage in Israel that even from a jail cell he proclaimed, “By God’s grace and mighty power, I have been
given the privilege of serving him by spreading this Good News” (Ephesians
3:7). Paul was absolutely persuaded that because we belong to Christ Jesus, we “share equally in the riches inherited by
God’s children” (Ephesians 3:6). These riches, these blessings were first
promised by God to His children, Israel. Now we get to enjoy
the promise of God’s blessings because we belong to Christ Jesus.
As seekers of the life in Christ,
I believe we will do well to love God’s Good News to Abraham, Moses, David,
Elijah, and Isaiah as much as we love God’s Good News proclaimed by Paul.

(Selah is a word that appears in the
Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my
correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about
these things.)
