I Done It For Love

I Done It For Love

We love because he first loved us.
1 John 4:19 (NRSV)

Brennan Manning told the story of Richard Ballenger of Anderson, SC. On Christmas Eve, Richard’s mother was busy with her final preparations for Christmas and asked seven year old Richard to shine the shoes she would wear to church the Christmas morning. Soon after, Richard presented her with the shoes glistening with a new shine. She was so proud of her little boy she gave him a quarter.

On Christmas morning as she put on the shoes, she noticed a lump in one shoe. She took it off and discovered a quarter wrapped in paper. Written on the paper in a child’s scrawl were the words, “I done it for love.”

At some point on this Christmas Eve, as you gaze on some representation of a manger with the newborn Christ child, I pray you hear the Messiah’s words to you, “I done it for love.”

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
