Hope In The LORD—Now And Always

Hope In The LORD—Now And Always

O Israel, put your hope in the LORD
    now and always.
Psalm 131:3

In this information and technology age, we are bombarded with news of world events. A politician can be in the middle of nowhere and make a seemingly innocuous statement, and immediately the audio and video are transmitted around the world. Often there are so many issues confronting us, we can be overwhelmed. In such times, Psalm 131 can help us.

The psalmist first affirms his humility. He does not believe understanding the deep and complex issues of his time are his responsibility alone. Unlike “babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food,” the psalmist has matured and is “like a weaned child is my soul within me” (Hebrews 5:12, Psalm 131:2). The psalmist then confirms his “hope in the Lord—now and always” (v. 3).

Sorting through all of the blather the media generates around the issues of our age can seem quite daunting. However daunting the task may be, it is not impossible to find the truth, “For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened (Matthew 7:8). Twenty-six times in the Gospel of Matthew Jesus says, “I tell you the truth.” In John 14:6 Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” We can find the truth, God’s truth, in the issues of our times. As we discover the truth, we “are the salt of the earth; we “are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-14).

So let’s continue to ask, seek and knock as we hope in the LORD, now and always. By God’s grace, may our light shine in the darkness of our times.

“O Israel, put your hope in the Lord
    now and always.”
Psalm 131:3

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
