Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Disciples

Meditations of the Gospel of Mark

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Disciples

So the disciples went out, telling everyone they met to repent of their sins and turn to God.
Mark 6:12
Read: Mark 6:7-13

As I read this passage, I immediately thought of the quote from the missionary Hudson Taylor: “God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply.” When God gives us an assignment, we can fully trust that God will meet all our needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)

I also thought how the verse quoted above is so lacking in many churches today. It is so seldom we hear about sins in today’s culture. We don’t need to return to an era years ago where some churches had lists of sins and were always telling their congregation to not do this, or don’t do that, or don’t go to this place. Sin is simply our expression of the meaning of our life while missing life from God. It is all the ways we deal with the meaning of our life apart from knowing and doing God’s will for our lives. The verse above was the heart of Jesus’ proclamation of the Kingdom of God, and it is still the heart of our life in Christ today.

My Takeaway: On August 14, we read the parable of the growing seed: “Night and day, while he’s asleep or awake, the seed sprouts and grows, but he does not understand how it happens” (Mark 4:27). I think this is what Jesus had in mind when in today’s passage he told his disciples, “But if any place refuses to welcome you or listen to you, shake its dust from your feet as you leave to show that you have abandoned those people to their fate” (verse 11). As we are faithful to share God’s word, we can trust God with the results. (See Isaiah 55:11)

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
