Meditations of the Gospel of Mark

The Crucifixion
The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself! Let this Messiah, this King of Israel, come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!” Even the men who were crucified with Jesus ridiculed him.
Mark 15:31-32
Read: Mark 15: 16-32
In Mark’s account of the crucifixion of Jesus, in these sixteen verses, I stopped counting at about fifteen incidents of abuse, mocking, ridicule and generally vile behavior toward Jesus. As I tried to picture in my mind the scene from the trial to Golgotha, the vision I have is of the senseless looting and violence against the innocent that has occurred all summer in our country. I thought about the great partisan divide in our country where our elected leaders seem incapable of civil discourse and respect for one another. And with a great sigh, I lamented that not much has changed in two thousand years.
My Takeaway:
1 O Lord, how long will you forget
me? Forever?
How long
will you look the other way?
2 How long must I struggle
with anguish in my soul,
with
sorrow in my heart every day?
How long
will my enemy have the upper hand?
3 Turn and
answer me, O Lord my
God!
Restore
the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die.
4 Don’t let my enemies
gloat, saying, “We have defeated him!”
Don’t let
them rejoice at my downfall.
5 But I
trust in your unfailing love.
I will
rejoice because you have rescued me.
6 I will sing to the Lord
because
he is good to me.
Psalm 13
Sē’lah

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
