Meditations on Romans

Peace and Hope
For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
Romans 5:5b
Read: Romans 5:1-5
As I am writing this, I notice the calendar and see Cheryl and I are sixty days away from making a bucket-list trip: Paris, and a Paris to Normandy River Cruise. Our excitement is growing by the day as we remember the joy we experienced in our two previous trips to Europe. In our life, we bask in God’s blessings and gloss over the difficulties we experience in life. When we are asked about our life in retirement, we can talk for hours about the amazing adventures we have experienced, and somehow we neglect to mention our experiences with cancer, heart attacks, hospitalizations and surgeries. Why is that?
I can assure you we are not in denial. We well remember the trauma and pain associated with our medical issues, as well as with the other ‘problems’ we have encountered. But we also remember we have been made right in God’s sight by our faith; we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. We have made the choice to stay in this place of undeserved privilege to which Christ has brought us because of our faith.
My Takeaway: Living in God’s favor means we live in God’s peace today, and forever. And this peace gives us hope to face any circumstance because we know how dearly God loves us. After all, he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love!

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
