Trinitarians

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

2 Corinthians 13:14

1700 years ago, theological debates centered on the question of how Jesus was related to the God the Father. This debate led to the Nicene creed which affirmed that God is Triune—three persons, one essence. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are co-eternal and equal in power and majesty. In 2 Corinthians 13:14, using just twenty-three words, Paul proclaims this very complex core of the Christian faith; we are Trinitarians.

The Trinity is so much more than our church doctrine. The Trinity distinguishes Christianity from all other faiths because our Triune God does not exist in solitude but in the community of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit exist together in perfect unity.

God created humanity in his own image and gave humankind a purpose: to steward his good creation. Although the first humans chose sin over their Creator, God did not turn his back on them. Rather, God planned for our redemption, which led to the Messiah, God’s own Son—the second person of the Trinity—who was willing to suffer and die to pay the penalty for the sins of humanity and reconcile believers to God. Comes then the third person of the Trinity—the Holy Spirit— given to all who trust in Jesus so we can now be transformed into a holy people and live with God eternally. Can you see? All three persons of the Trinity are involved in our salvation, and our sanctification.

My Takeaway: Our Triune God is in a loving relationship, eternally, as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Can you see? God did not create humanity because God was lonely or bored. It wasn’t necessary for God to create the world. Or us. God’s desire to be in relationship with us is a choice rather than an obligation. Can you see? God chose to love and redeem us. My life, anchored in the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, holds me in Their grace for today.

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
