The Prayers of God’s People

Meditations on

Staying In the Grace for Today

The Prayers of God’s People

The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right,

and his ears are open to their prayers.

1 Peter 3:12a

In the verse quoted above, Peter is quoting Psalm 34:12. This transition from the Old to the New Testament reveals the prayers of God’s people are hugely important to Him. Not only are our prayers important, but they are also sacred. In Revelation 5:8, it is written that the twenty-four elders around God’s throne in heaven “held gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of God’s people.” That the prayers of God’s people rise to God from His Holy Altar is repeated twice more in Revelation 8.

Sometimes we pray by rote, or hurriedly, or as our mind drifts off to other thoughts. But to our Heavenly Father, our prayers are important, even sacred. I want to be more mindful of God’s perspective on my prayers.

My Takeaway: I believe pausing before I pray, and contemplating how God is eagerly awaiting my prayers coming to Him as incense from His Holy Altar, will most definitely help me stay in His grace for today.

First Think, Then Pray

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
