Meditations on
Staying In the Grace for Today
May 6, 2025
You Belong to God
But you belong to God, my dear
children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit
who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.
1 John 4:4
In the first three verses of 1 John 4, John was warning his church that there were false prophets among them who were denying the full divinity and full humanity of Jesus. John reminds his church they do not need to fear those false prophets because they belong to God. What a beautiful phrase; You belong to God!
Because we belong to God, God’s Holy Spirit has been poured into our hearts through our faith in the risen Christ Jesus. (Remember the passage we read yesterday from Romans 8? “If God is for us, who can ever be against us?” (8:31b))
There is so much noise in our culture. Voices telling us who we are and what we should believe. Voices, within, reminding us of all the times we have tried and failed to measure up to some standard that someone set for us. As we learned yesterday, it is so very important who we believe is telling us the truth, the truth about who God is, who, and whose, we are, and who our neighbors are.
My Takeaway: Today’s verse
is another strong plank in the foundation we are building to enable us to stay
in the grace for today: “But you belong to God, my dear children.”
Let’s spend the day rehearsing this truth: I belong to God!!!!!!!!

(Selah is a word that appears in the
Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my
correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about
these things.)
