On top of 10,000 foot Mt. Titlis in the Swiss Alps

Home Again
“. . . all glory to God our Father forever and ever! Amen”
Philippians 4: 20
I ended my meditations on
Philippians with, “And my God will fully
satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus”
(Philippians 4:19 NRSV). That verse has been the theme of my time away.
Throughout my travels to Florida for my church conference, God’s grace and His
favor surrounded me. The last two weeks Cheryl and I celebrated our life
together with a River Cruise on the Rhine, preceded by three days in Amsterdam
and followed by two days in Lucerne, Switzerland. God’s grace and favor was
upon us for the entire trip. Here are just a few examples.
Our first afternoon in Amsterdam,
we stopped for a cup of tea at a Starbucks located along one of their many
canals. I checked us in on Facebook and noticed my friend Bill Platt and his
wife Susan had just checked in at the Van Gogh Museum just a few miles away.
Bill was the pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Jasper, FL when I was
serving at First UMC there. We both moved to new appointments, and I had not
seen him for 15 years! I sent him a message and we were able to reconnect and
visit that afternoon. The next evening we had a delightful and leisurely dinner
together.
We visited magnificent
cathedrals, but they were crowded with tourists. While we could marvel at the
genius of their design and construction, there was no quiet time for
reflection. Then we visited Heidelberg, Germany, and a beautiful church in the
center of town just as a noon service was beginning. We didn’t understand a
word that was read or prayed, but we knew we were in a worshipping house of God
and the organ music was superb. Those were precious minutes for us.
Later that same day, while our
longboat was docked in Speyer, we decided to forgo dinner on the boat and
wandered into town. There we discovered the Kaiserdom, or Imperial Cathedral,
Germany’s largest Romanesque building. It is huge and magnificent. There were
just a few people present and we were blessed with time for quiet reflection
and prayer kneeling before the altar.
We had bountiful adventures throughout
our thirteen days, made many new friends and came home tired, but renewed and
thanking God for His blessings and favor.

(Selah is a word that appears in the
Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my
correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about
these things.)
