He Still Hadn’t Found What He Was Looking For
“I’ve obeyed all these
commandments,” the young man replied. “What else must I do?”
Matthew 19:20
Matthew’s Gospel doesn’t give us
many details about this young man. All we know is that he was searching for
eternal life, and was acutely aware that even though he had kept all the
commandments of God, he still hadn’t found what he was looking for. He asked
Jesus what he had to do to have eternal life. Jesus said keep the commandments.
He asked which ones. Jesus told him. He said he had done that, “What else must
I do?” The man revealed he lacked the greatest gift from God: assurance.
There are several places in
scripture where we get a glimpse of assurance. A few of my favorites are:
“There is only one thing worth
being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away
from her.” (Luke 10:42)
“Simon Peter answered him, “Lord,
to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe
and know that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:68-69)
“I regard everything as loss
because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” (Philippians
3:8)
“. . . you have received a spirit
of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing
witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then
heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. . .” (Romans 8:15-17)
Have you found what (who) you are
looking for?

(Selah is a word that appears in the
Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my
correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about
these things.)
