Coming in Glory

Coming in Glory

And when Christ, who is your life,
is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.
Colossians 3:4

The purpose of the Christian season of Advent is to prepare us for the coming again of Jesus in glory. The foundation of our hope in his Second Coming was his birth in Bethlehem. During the Season of Christmas, twelve days from December 25 to January 6, we reflect on the truth that in Christ, God entered human history and identified fully with the human condition. We recall the Apostle John’s magnificent statement, "So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son" (John 1:14).

Christmas arouses hope in Jesus’ coming again in glory to establish God’s Kingdom on earth. As we wait for the coming again of Jesus, we have been commissioned by Jesus to begin building for his Kingdom. What does this look like? The Apostle Paul answers this question in his letter to the church in Colossae. In his greeting to the church, Paul writes, “For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and your love for all of God’s people . . . the love for others that the Holy Spirit has given you” (Colossians 1:4,8). Paul’s letter tells us that the old axiom, “People won't care how much you know until they know how much you care” has the ring of Gospel truth.

One of the best spiritual disciplines is to frequently ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the evidence of the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. Are people hearing of our faith in Christ Jesus and our love for all of God’s people? Can they see the love for others that the Holy Spirit has given us?

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
