“What Must I Do To Be Saved?”

Is anything worth more than your soul?

Mark 8:37

Jesus is very clear that the decisions we make, the way we live our life has eternal significance. He doesn’t want us to be afraid, he does want us to know we can experience the assurance of our faith; but he does want us to know that we must ask him the question, “What must I do to be saved?” We don’t hear that question asked much anymore. The common cultural belief is that there is nothing beyond the grave; this life is all there is. There is a sentimental component in our cultural that supposes almost everyone goes to heaven when they die, especially those who die unexpectedly or tragically.

In the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus used three parables to give us the divine perspective on the issues of life and death. The parable of the Ten Bridesmaids affirms it is a fatal mistake not to prepare for meeting God at the end of our life. The parable of the Three Servants points to the danger of leaving undone the work the Lord has assigned to us. The parable of the Final Judgment affirms there will be more surprises, even at the end of life, especially for those who don’t ask “What must I do to be saved?”

Those who believe in the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting have found the answer to the eternal question in Romans 10:9-10,

“If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.”
