Fear Not
“. . . how much more will the
heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
“. . . Receive the Holy Spirit.”
Luke 11:13, John 20:22
In Second Corinthians, Paul said
we, the followers of Jesus, have the mind of Christ. It is the mind of Christ
that enables the Christian to have the spiritual discernment to understand the
things of God. (2 Corinthians 2:14 -16) The mind of Christ is a gift of God
through His indwelling Holy Spirit. For the Christian, it is not a matter of
believing in the Holy Spirit; rather, it is a matter of consciously receiving
God’s gift of the Holy Spirit, and then living expecting the Holy Spirit to
guide, to inspire, and yes, to speak to you!
What troubles me the most in
these troubling times, is not fear of a terrorist attack in my community, or
within the USA. What troubles me the most is so many of my brothers and sisters
in Christ sounding just like the chorus of fearful voices crying out for more
guns and less Muslims in our country. This meditation is not about gun control
– I have my share of weapons in my gun safe --, or immigration policy. This meditation
is a call for the fully-devoted followers of Christ to practice Psalm 107:2
and, “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.” Let us listen for the voice of the
Holy Spirit within us and commit not to speak until he gives us his words.
As we listen for the voice of the
Spirit, let us remember that he only speaks in complete harmony with the Word
of Christ. In these troubling times, whatever he says to you will therefore be
entirely consistent with Saint Paul’s affirmation to Timothy: “For God has not
given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and
self-discipline.” Also, someone has counted and found that the phrase, “Fear
not” appears 365 times in the Bible. That is a powerful antidote to the fear
mongering politicians who populate these troubling times.

(Selah is a word that appears in the
Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my
correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about
these things.)
