In Him We Live

“For in him we live and move and exist”
Acts 17:28

The foundation of Biblical faith is belief in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. This foundation includes the belief that our Creator God is intimately involved with His creation. The Apostle Paul beautifully affirms this foundation by writing, “(Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:15-17 NRSV).

In every generation, there are those who affirm this faith with the eloquence of Paul, “For in him we live and move and exist” (Acts 17:28). Just as some people laughed at Paul in contempt, so also, in every generation there are those who deny the existence of God. Standing with Paul, we quietly rest in the assurance of our faith while the world around us scorns and ridicules our love for Christ. Perhaps, even worse than the scoffers, are those who claim a devotion to Christ, yet relish in their self-willed life.

In this present election cycle, the fully devoted followers of Jesus are being lumped in with some generic “evangelical Christian voters,” although the media shows no knowledge of what it means to be an evangelical Christian. I don’t hear much talk from politicians or the media about “Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4 NRSV). Or, I’m trusting God is working in me, giving me the desire and the power to do what pleases him. (Philippians 2:13) Or, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need” (Matthew 6:33).

Even so, we are surrounded by a huge cloud of witnesses to the life of faith, so we will keep our eyes of Jesus and continue to live, move and exist in Christ!

Can I get an, “Amen?”

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
