Blameless Until Jesus Comes Again
Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your whole
spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ comes
again.
1 Thessalonians 5:23
Remember when we learned in
school about the difference between ‘may’
and ‘can’? The word “can” speaks to
our ability to do something and the word “may” speaks to our permission to
undertake something. In this sense, may does not carry the weight Paul assigns
to it in the passage quoted above. In this Biblical sense, may is affirmation
of that which God has done, God is doing, and that which God will most
certainly do. There is no wiggle room here, God is moving. Here is how Paul
described it in his letter to the Philippians, “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do
what pleases him” (Philippians 2:13).
So this is what Paul is saying to
you and to me: the God of peace has made you holy in every way, and the God of
peace will keep your whole spirit and soul blameless until Jesus comes again in
final victory!
God has made you holy and God
will keep you holy! Please let this
powerful affirmation sink deep into your spirit. Today, this very instant, you
have right-standing before God the Father Almighty because God has made you
holy and God will keep you holy! This is not your doing. This is the work of
Jesus who died for you and rose again.
How different might your life be
today if you kept this truth ever present in your mind: God has made me holy
and God will keep me holy! Please spend a few minutes allowing your mind to
absorb this precious truth: God has made me holy and God will keep me
holy! Next, spend a few minutes going
over your calendar for today. Whom will you see? What activities do you have
scheduled? Whom might you encounter, or
correspond with today? How might the knowledge that God has made you holy and
that God will keep you holy influence your day?

(Selah is a word that appears in the
Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my
correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about
these things.)
