He Will Come Again In Glory
When he comes on that day, he will receive glory from his holy
people—praise from all who believe. And this includes you, for you believed
what we told you about him.
2 Thessalonians 1:10
Recently, as I watched the news
one evening, the continued sectarian violence in the Middle East was prominent.
Then the morning that I am writing this, news of two police officers who were
ambushed and killed is dominating the news. On both occasions I responded with
a prayer longing for the day when we can all just get along. Someday this violence
and suffering must come to an end. The Apostle Paul agreed and reminds the
church that Christ is coming again. In the words of the Nicene Creed, “He will
come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have
no end.”
Paul assures the church that God
knows of their persecution, and he knows of those who refuse to obey His truth.
Paul also assures the church that those who are in a right relationship with
God through faith in Jesus do not have to fear the glorious day of Christ’s
return. On the glorious day of Christ’s return, God’s justice will prevail and
the faithful will be vindicated. For those who chose to go their own way and
not be reconciled with God, they will get their wish for all eternity as they
will be forever separated from Christ and His mighty power.
Since Paul dwelled on this theme
throughout the little letter of 2 Thessalonians, I suspect life in Thessalonica
for the Christians was quite similar to present day Aleppo or Mosul. Paul did
not prophecy a real time end to their persecution and suffering, but he did
prophecy the glorious day when the faithful will be vindicated in the coming
again of Jesus in final victory. Do you think that prophecy brought comfort to
the Thessalonians? How about in our world today? Can you look ahead to the
coming again of Jesus and be comforted today?

(Selah is a word that appears in the
Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my
correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about
these things.)
