Matthew 7

Today we conclude our reading of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus has painted a beautiful picture of the Kingdom of God. He has described a way of living that I want to be my way of life. I am so convinced that His Way is the Way for me, I am sure His Way is for everybody. But, how do I convince other members of my family and my neighbors?

I don’t do the convincing, that is the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit both convicts us of our sin and our need for a Savior, as well as affirms that through faith in Jesus we are the children of God.

When I forget this, when I think it is all my responsibility to win others for Christ, I am tempted to compromise my beliefs. I am tempted to change my Christian doctrines, my forms of worship, my ethical and moral standards, so as not to offend anyone.

When I want everyone to be Christian so much that I twist and turn the Gospel to try and accommodate everyone, then no one will be a Christian. When I do this Jesus says I will be trampled and destroyed. (Matthew 7:6)

Jesus invites all people to come to Him and receive eternal life. But, as I extend His invitation to others I need to remember Jesus also said:

“Don't look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don't fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires total attention.” (Matthew 7:13-14 The Message)

What does today’s reading reveal to you about God?
What does it reveal to you about yourself?
Think about what God wants you to do or remember about this passage.

Does God want you to change anything in your life?
