Peace and Hope

Peace and Hope

For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
Romans 5:5b
Read: Romans 5:1-5

A few weeks ago, as Cheryl and I were basking in the afterglow of a wonderful vacation in Seattle, we were remarking how wonderful it is to live in God’s favor. There were no hiccups in this trip, and as we heard about the difficulty others were having through airport cancellations or delays, we were almost embarrassed that we had sailed through our trip. Then we recalled there was a huge delay in leaving the airport in Seattle, and that we had to run to make our connection in Atlanta. Our life tends to be like that experience; we bask in God’s blessings and gloss over the difficulties we experience in life. When we are asked about our life in retirement, we can talk for hours about the amazing adventures we have experienced, and somehow we neglect to mention our experiences with cancer, heart attacks, hospitalizations and surgeries. Why is that?

I can assure you we are not in denial. We well remember the trauma and pain associated with our medical issues, as well as with the other ‘problems’ we have encountered. But we also remember we have been made right in God’s sight by our faith; we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. We have made the choice to stay in this place of undeserved privilege to which Christ has brought us because of our faith.

My Takeaway: Living in God’s favor means we live in God’s peace today, and forever. And this peace gives us hope to face any circumstance because we know how dearly God loves us. After all, he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love!

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
