It Is All About Control
For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was
given. As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God.
Romans 10:4
Read Romans 9:25 -
10:4
Whenever there is a dispute, any
place – government, civic associations, churches – the issue isn’t what is
being talked about, the issue is control: who gets to make the decision! Being
in control is a core value of being human. All of the laws and rules developed
by Israel had but one aim: being in control of their relationship with God.
They believed if they could just cross all the t’s and dot all the i’s they
would be in right-standing with God. But God wasn’t looking at their t’s and
i’s; God was looking to see if they loved mercy, if they acted justly, and if
they were humbling walking with Him. God wanted them to trust him. When they
didn’t, God sent “his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him
will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to
judge the world, but to save the world through him” (John 3:16-17).
My Takeaway: Today’s passage is an invitation for us to take time
to very seriously think about our life as the disciples of Jesus. How much
assurance of our salvation do we attach to the things we think we are doing
right, such as church attendance, financial support of the church, and
participation in ministries? How much of our assurance is derived by our
trusting God with our lives? I mean real trust, as in trust and obey!

(Selah is a word that appears in the
Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my
correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about
these things.)
