Never Alone
“Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars. I am
the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.”
Romans 11:3
Read Romans 11:1-6
We want to remember that when we
come into a right-standing relationship with God through faith in Jesus, we are
coming home to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of Israel. Our Bible
includes both the Old and New Testaments. In the Apostle Paul’s day, the local
congregations were composed of both Jews and Gentiles, and it was paramount to
Paul that the local congregations continue their efforts to make disciples of
both their Jewish neighbors and the Gentiles. For this reason, Paul again
returned to his explanation of how the first advent of Christ was a fulfillment
of God’s original promise to the people Israel. It is important for us to pay
attention to Paul because in just a few days he will show us how Israel’s history
becomes our history when we come to God through faith in Jesus.
My Takeaway: The Apostle Paul quoted Elijah in the passage above (1
Kings 19:10), and then quotes 1 Kings 19:18 in providing God’s answer to
Elijah: “And do you remember God’s reply? He said, “No, I have 7,000 others who
have never bowed down to Baal!” Why is that important? Because sometimes we can
feel all alone, just like Elijah did. Even so, God is very much aware of where
we are, and very much aware of where all of his followers are.
“Don’t be afraid, for
I am with you.
Don’t be discouraged,
for I am your God.
I will strengthen you
and help you.
I will hold you up
with my victorious right hand.”
Isaiah 41:10

(Selah is a word that appears in the
Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my
correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about
these things.)
