Meditations on The Acts of the Apostles
March 1, 2021
The Word of Our God Endures Forever
But the word of God continued to spread and flourish.
Acts 12:24
Read: Acts 12:20-25
As we begin our third month in the Book of Acts, we conclude Part One. Part One has followed the Day of Pentecost for twelve years. During this time, the New Community of Believers encountered resistance and persecution from the religious leaders in Jerusalem and from the King of Israel who attempted to execute their leaders. Even so, the word of God continued to spread and flourish. The Christian church expanded to Samaria, Damascus, Lydda, Joppa, Caesarea, and Antioch.
Peter was central to the development of the church in Part One of Acts. However, except for a brief mention in chapter 15 after Peter’s encounter with the angel in chapter 12, he is not mentioned anymore in Acts. In the closing scene in today’s reading, the same Greek word used for the angel striking Peter on the side to wake him, (12:7) is used for the angel striking Herod down. We have no indication where Luke received the details of Herod’s death. The contemporary historian Josephus wrote of Herod’s death and said he was in agony for five days. I believe Luke includes the details to show the power of God preserving His church.
We will begin Part Two tomorrow with Paul’s first missionary journey.
My Takeaway:
8 The grass
withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of our God
endures forever.”
Isaiah 40:8

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
