Chapter ten has the concluding stop on what is known as the Roman Road to Salvation. When sharing the scriptural basis for salvation you can move progressively through Paul’s letter to the Romans. Many people remember the first verse and then make margin notes to help them go onto the next stop:
The Roman Road to Salvation
1st stop - Romans 1:20-21 - God Is the Creator of Life
2nd stop- Romans 3:23 - Why We Need Salvation – The Fact of Our Sin
3rd stop - Romans 3:10 - Our Inability to get right with God.
4th stop - Romans 6:23a - The Penalty of Sin
5th stop - Romans 5:8 - God’s Plan of Salvation
6th stop - Romans 6:23 - God’s Promise of Eternal Life
7th stop - Romans 10:9-10 - Our Response
8th stop - Romans 10:13, Romans 8:1 and Romans 5:1 – God’s Response
Paul sums up his argument by writing, “So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News.” (10:17) To me one of the most beautiful of all of Paul’s prose is v. 14-15: “But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!”
Every member of a church is called by God to be a messenger of the Good News. We all have a part. Through prayer, encouragement, invitation, and welcoming people to come and hear, we all have a part. The one key ingredient that makes a great church for Jesus Christ is where all, each and every one, of the church members embrace v. 14-15 as their personal assignment from God. God is looking for congregations that have a passion for people coming to faith in Christ. When congregations care enough to personally participate, great things happen.
