Jesus Is Our Gate

October 8, 2015
Jesus Is Our Gate

Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.
John 10:9

Jesus told Nicodemus, “So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again’ (John 3:7). Sometimes people are prone to misinterpret Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus to mean that our ‘born again’ experience is a one-off experience. Now we are saved, so let’s get on with the rest of our life. I take Jesus very seriously when he said that he will not lose me (John 10), and thus I do not believe we lose our salvation and have to be re-saved. However, it has been my experience that I have been born again, and again and again. My journey toward the fullness of life in Christ has not been on a straight-line super highway. Rather, my experience has been full of zigs and zags with more travel on two-rut wilderness lanes than interstate highways. Each and every time I receive more light from the Father, each time I experience Jesus anew as my way, the truth, and my life, I am born again, and again and again.

Jesus’ metaphor of being our gate, through whom we are saved, and through whom we come and go freely reveals to me the need to come to him each and every day. I came through Jesus, the gate, to be saved decades ago. This morning, I came through Jesus, the gate, again as I greeted this new day. It is in my continually coming through Jesus, my gate to the Father, that I experience Jesus as my way, the truth, and my life. And it is through Jesus, my gate, that I experience the abundant life he so graciously promised to me, and to you!

Keep enjoying Jesus!
