Wherever Your Treasure Is
Store your treasures in heaven,
where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever
your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
Matthew 6:20-21
My first step in seeking the life
in Christ as my way of life was to adopt a Christ-like worldview. By worldview,
I mean the lens or filter by which I process all of my interactions with the
world. Jesus made it abundantly clear that he did nothing on his own accord;
everything he said and did was in harmony with his Father’s will for him. For
those seeking to be fully devoted followers of Jesus, our worldview can be
shaped as we simply begin each day in prayer:
“O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Thy name in all the earth; I
worship Thee. With all angels and saints I adore Thee. I acknowledge Thee to be
by Creator and my God. I render Thee the homage of my being and my life. I am not my own, I am Thine. By
creation and redemption I am Thine. I will devote myself to Thy divine service
this day and forever. O grant me grace for this, dear Lord. Amen” (A
Pocket Prayer Book, The Upper Room, 1941. Emphasis mine.)
Jesus said that wherever our
treasure is, there the desires of our heart are. Who is my treasure? I have
come to the place where I believe I cannot have a treasure greater than the
person of Jesus, therefore I want to live in harmony with Saint Paul’s declaration:
“Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the
realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right
hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life
is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to
the whole world, you will share in all his glory” (Colossians 3:1-4).
“Wherever your treasure is, there
the desires of your heart will also be.”

(Selah is a word that appears in the
Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my
correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about
these things.)
