In Corinth

Meditations on The Acts of the Apostles

In Corinth

One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city.”

Acts 18:9-10

Read: Acts 18:1-11

Paul repeats his well-established pattern when he arrived in Corinth: “Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks.” (v.4) And when Paul met resistance from the Jews, he announced, “From now on I will go to the Gentiles.” (v.6b) However, while Paul was following his patterns, something new happened. In all of the previous towns he visited, he stayed just a few days, or perhaps weeks. In Corinth he remained “a year and a half, teaching them the word of God.” (v.11) Other than in his home base of Antioch, this is the longest Paul stayed in any town. In addition to teaching, Paul did much writing while in Corinth. It is likely his letter to the Galatians was written from Corinth, and for certain, 1 & 2 Thessalonians were written while Paul was in Corinth.

Another pattern that is repeated in today’s reading is in the verse quoted above. Paul is being led supernaturally by the Holy Spirit.

My Takeaway: I believe we can trust the Holy Spirit to lead the people of God today. One caveat: while we may have dreams or visions, as did Paul, the leading of the Holy Spirit will always be consistent with the Bible, as Paul instructed Timothy, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
