Paul Arrested

Meditations on The Acts of the Apostles

Paul Arrested

The whole city was aroused, and the people came running from all directions. Seizing Paul, they dragged him from the temple, and immediately the gates were shut.

Acts 21:30

Read: Acts 21:27-36

In today’s reading, the Apostle Paul has seen the inside of the beautiful Temple for the last time. The false charges against Paul, very similar to the false charges against Stephen, resulted in his arrest. Over the next several years, he was processed through the Roman judicial system, eventually ending his journey in Rome.

Paul had wanted to be in Jerusalem for Pentecost. Luke doesn’t specifically say that he made it, but the references of large crowds and visitors from the province of Asia, suggest this was Pentecost. (Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks, is celebrated seven weeks after Passover, commemorating the first fruits of the harvest and associated with the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai.)

My Takeaway: The civil authorities intervened to protect Paul and give him an opportunity to proclaim the Good News. Nothing is impossible for God. I need to remember that in these turbulent times.

Sē’lah

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
