Meditations on The Acts of the Apostles

Priscilla, Aquila and Apollos
“. . . Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John.”
Acts 18:24-25
Read: Acts 18:18-28
When Paul arrived in Corinth, he met Aquila, and his wife Priscilla. They formed a friendship and business partnership and lived together. And together, they formed the church in Corinth.
From the way Luke presents the names of Aquila and Priscilla, I believe he wants us to see something about the role of women in the church. Initially, they are introduced in Corinth as husband and wife. When they leave Corinth with Paul, they are listed as wife and husband, as they are when they stay in Ephesus. When they met Apollos and “invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately” (v.26) they are again identified as wife and husband. I don’t think this is a random ordering of the names, rather it is an indication of their equal roles in proclaiming the Gospel.
My Takeaway: “. . . and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Jesus, Acts 1:8) We have seen so much in the Book of Acts of how Jesus’ declaration was fulfilled. But there so much more that we have no record of, just the evidence of, as Apollos is an example. God is indeed actively working in the affairs of the world.

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
