As God’s Partners

Meditations on Second Corinthians

As God’s Partners

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

2 Corinthians 5:17

Read: 2 Corinthians 5:16 - 6:2

The goal of those of us seeking the life in Christ as our way of life is to become like Christ. I believe one of the most essential qualities of the life in Christ is having a good sense of awareness. Our sense of awareness reminds us of both the goal – to become like Christ -- and an honest appraisal of where we are in our journey, what yet remains to be transformed in our life to become like Christ?

The essential quality of awareness is perspective. Are we looking at ourselves, others, and the world through the eyes of Jesus, or is our perspective on life more like the ways of our world? The reading for today offers many opportunities to examine our perspective:

Is our Christian life something that we place alongside the rest of our life, or have we died to our old life and no longer live for ourselves? Do we now live for Christ? Are we trying to fit the life in Christ over our regular life, or do we see ourselves as a new person? Is our old life gone, and has a new life begun? Is our new life in Christ something we have earned, or deserve? Or is it a gift from God? Whose responsibility is it to share the Good News about Jesus? The church?  The pastor? Or are we an ambassador for Christ?

My Takeaway: “As God’s partners, we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of God’s kindness and then ignore it. For God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:1-2)

(Selah is a word that appears in the Book of Psalms that I often use as the Complimentary Closing in my correspondence. Its meaning, as I use the word, is to pause and think about these things.)
