The story of the widow’s mite is very compelling. Today we talk about extravagant generosity as a way of thinking about financial stewardship. The widow’s mite is certainly a beautiful example of giving from the heart. However, as we seen several times in Mark’s gospel, still waters run deep.
Jesus’ teaching on the Messianic title ‘Son of David’ begins at verse 35. Jesus only needed 70 words to delight the crowds and confuse us. Unlike the crowd we are not familiar with the Messianic prophecy of Psalm 110 that Jesus quotes. However, with a little reflection we can begin to see why the New Testament church referred to Jesus the Messiah, as Son of God. This little teaching opens the door to begin realizing Jesus is not just the Messiah King; he is the living embodiment of Israel’s God.
We turn again to the widow’s mite. The widow didn’t put in just two copper coins. She gave all she had. The Messiah is not just a descendant of King David, another human king among human kings; he is Israel’s God who has given all he had.
Christ Jesus,
who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
even death on a cross.
(Philippians 2: 5-8)
