“When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with awe, and they ran to greet him.” (v.15) I wonder why? Was it Jesus’ reputation that put them in awe? Maybe his appearance which had been transfigured was still radiating the glory of God. What would it take for me to be in awe of the presence of Jesus?
Jesus is still concerned with the lack of faith of the people. Because they were building their faith on signs and miracles they were beginning to reflect a ‘what have you do for me lately’ attitude. Jesus is always leading us to build our faith on the truth of God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth. God is worthy of our praise, adoration, love, and devotion because God is.
The highest goal for followers of Jesus is to “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:5) When we begin to approach that goal our attitudes change, we begin to see and think differently, we begin to pray differently.
A good devotional exercise today is to see myself in the crowd. If I had the mind of Christ, what would I have said to the anxious father; the struggling disciples, the others in the crowd?
(At the end of today’s passage Jesus tells his disciples that “this kind (of demon) can be cast out only by prayer.” Because Jesus does not provide further details I assume he is referring to his experience on the Mount of Transfiguration.)
