Luke 23: 13-31

Luke has reached the climax of his gospel. Two men, who seem somewhat insignificant compared to all that is happening, are chosen by God to be remembered throughout the world.  Barabbas was guilty of leading a revolt against Rome. Jesus was charged with inciting revolt, when in fact Jesus had been urging the people to go the way of peace. Jesus was innocent. Barabbas was guilty. Jesus took Barabbas’ place on the cross.

Simon was in the right place at the right time. Jesus has been battered and bruised and has been without food or water for more than twenty-four hours. Simon is chosen to take up the cross and follow Jesus.

There it is. I’m guilty. Jesus is innocent. Jesus has taken my place. Now, will I take up his cross and follow him?

Jesus gives one last warning to the people of Jerusalem. You cannot burn green wood. But, when it is dry, it will go up in flames. If this is what the authorities are doing to the One who led people in the ways of peace, what can you expect when the people begin to truly revolt? Violence begets violence. How slowly we are to accept the way of our Master.
