Luke ends his Gospel with the same challenge he presented at the beginning. The challenge is for us to expand our perspective, our vision of God and His Kingdom. By faith, can we dare to believe the angel Gabriel’s words to Mary, “For nothing is impossible with God?”
It is certainly OK to give yourself permission to struggle with the resurrection and Jesus’ new bodily form. The disciples were in Jesus’ presence and they struggled to believe. But, struggle we must because the resurrection is the very foundation upon which our assignment from Jesus stands. We are called to proclaim in the authority of Jesus to all the nations; “There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.”
Jesus’ resurrected body is the foundation for our hope of resurrection which the Apostle Paul discusses in detail in 1 Corinthians 15. That we have a hope of our resurrection is the fulfillment of our prayer, “Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Jesus is coming again in final victory and his followers will live with him in His new Kingdom. In the meantime our assignment from our Messiah King is, filled by the Holy Spirit with power from heaven, to proclaim the Good News and build for the coming Kingdom through our acts of justice and mercy.
