Luke began his Gospel by telling Theophilus he was presenting a factual account of Jesus so that “you can be certain of the truth of everything you were taught.” Luke seems to have that clearly in his mind as he records the details surrounding Jesus’ death. Perhaps this explains why Luke is so dispassionate in telling the story of the crucifixion. Another reason may be such seemingly cruel and unusual punishments were not at all unusual in the world of the Roman Empire, as evidenced by two criminals being crucified with Jesus.
Luke stressed, through the testimony of two witnesses, that Jesus was innocent. And, as Luke is looking ahead to Sunday, he makes clear there will be no mistake when the women come to the empty tomb. It is a new tomb, there are no other bodies in there and the women went to the burial; they know in which tomb Jesus was laid.
Luke is laying a solid foundation for the heart and soul of the first century church; the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus was not, as some claimed, a false messiah who was executed by the Romans. Jesus is the Messiah King of Israel who was innocent of any wrong doing and though he was in fact executed, dead and buried by the Romans, he is in fact Risen from the dead.
